As a wholly owned subsidiary of ElectroSonics, our mission is to advance the development of medical diagnostic tools using proprietary radar technology. In line with this mission PneumoSonics Inc. is in the final stages of the commercialization of a handheld pneumothorax detector. In addition to the pneumothorax device, PneumoSonics Inc. is also in the development process of additional handheld, portable diagnostic devices.
PneumoSonics Inc. was formed in April 2008 after certain assets of BIOMEC
Inc. were acquired by Greatbatch Ltd. of Buffalo NY. Two technologies being developed by
BIOMEC Inc. before the acquisition were specifically excluded from the transaction, one of
which is the Pneumothorax Detector "PneumoScan". PneumoSonics Inc. was formed to continue the
development, clinical and commercialization activities for the retained technologies previously
initiated by BIOMEC Inc.
BIOMEC Inc.'s mission was to accelerate the commercialization of medical device
technologies through internal development activities and collaboration with major institutions
and OEM partners. In 1998, BIOMEC developed a proven methodology to obtain and execute
Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) government grants that supported many of its
product development programs. Prior to the transaction with Greatbatch, BIOMEC had been
awarded 51 of these SBIR grants with a value of $25 million, an average of almost one per
month, since receiving its first grant in March 1999. This volume of grants allowed BIOMEC
to develop extensive engineering capabilities in several high-growth medical technology
areas, including non-invasive diagnostic devices like the Pneumothorax Detector.
